The FORTUNA project, a three-year initiative funded by the European Union, started in January 2024. Its main objective is to identify future research challenges within the framework of the European Farm to Fork (F2F) Strategy. This strategy sets forth quantitative targets aiming to decrease the overall use and risk of chemical pesticides by 50%, as well as to reduce the use of more hazardous pesticides by 50% before the year 2030.

A pivotal aspect of FORTUNA is the exploration and analysis of methods, tools, and mechanisms across biological/ecological, technological, and socio-economic dimensions. The aim is to unveil effective approaches and viable strategies that significantly decrease the reliance on chemical pesticides and reduce the risk associated with the use, paving the way for innovative pesticide-free farming practices while securing competitiveness and economic viability of the European agriculture.

In more details, the specific objectives of FORTUNA are to:

  • Increase networking and knowledge exchange across Europe promoting a reduction in pesticide risk and use beyond the F2F targets;
  • Map and identify potential innovations and challenges;
  • Improve understanding of main knowledge gaps as well as drivers and barriers to go beyond F2F targets for chemical pesticides;
  • Identify research needs for further reduction or phasing out chemical pesticides in agriculture.

The consortium of FORTUNA is led by Silke Dachbrodt-Saaydeh at the Julius Kuhn-Institut Federal Research Centre for Cultivated Plants. It includes a multi-disciplinary consortium of 11 partners from eight EU Member States, and as well as one from Switzerland.

  • FORTUNA participated to the IPM conference in Brussels in May 2024

    Silke Dachbrodt-Saayeh, the FORTUNA coordinator, and other FORTUNA consortium partners, participated to the conference: Holistic IPM: Reducing Pesticide Use that took place in Brussels the 14th of May 2024. The event presented the results of two key research projects on IPM: IPM Works and IPM Decisions.
